    POSITION: Laboratory Technician

    LOCATION: Nonnewaug High School
    START DATE: May 15, 2024 (10 Days of Training with current Technician)
    August 26, 2024 (First Day for All Teachers)

    PRIMARY FUNCTION: The laboratory technician position at Nonnewaug High School is responsible for coordinating with the Science Department Chair, Head Custodian, and administration in the organization of science lab experiments.
    EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Background in education and/or chemical safety preferred.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Candidate preferably has a background in the following areas:
    • Knowledge of chemicals; Organics, Inorganics, Flammables, Corrosives, Acid, Bases and their proper storage.
    • Knowledge that the chemicals being used are safe to use in a school environment and student safety.
    • Knowledge of the proper storage and coding of the Science Department chemicals and maintaining chemical binders.
    • Highly organizational skills
    • Preparing and dispensing of chemical solutions for all science preparations.
    • Maintain Distilled water for classrooms.
    • Scheduling all labs for all levels within the Science Department.Setting up all necessary equipment and supplies for every lab within a 24 hour advance notice. Breakdown lab experiments once completed.
    • Ordering chemicals, equipment and other supplies for the Science Department.
    • Maintaining proper care of all chemical waste. Knowledge of neutralizing chemicals. Proper labeling and security of waste for removal day. Working with the Director of Facilities on this issue of waste. Maintaining a waste binder log.
    • Maintaining inventory binders of equipment and general supplies.
    • Maintaining all subject matter binders for each teacher's prep.
    • Maintaining Safety Data Sheets binder. Keeping teachers abreast of any updates to SDS information.
    • Working with Fuss and O’Neil on any new SDS coming into the Science Department and forwarding the information to them.
    • Lab Tech is to keep updated on all current safety measures. Keeping teachers updated on safety measures.
    • Follow all current safety rules.
    • Keeping a current inventory listing for 2 chemical storerooms and 2 supply rooms.
    • Proper knowledge of the use of prep room equipment. Such as fume hood, hot plate/stirrer, electronic balance, vacuum machine and dishwasher.
    • Maintaining and cleaning science equipment.
